Stunning mountains, beautiful forests, pristine beaches, and thrilling outdoor recreation create the perfect South Carolina camping adventure. If you’re ready to explore this unique state, Mountain Rest Cabins, nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains of upstate South Carolina, could be your ideal home-base for exploring.

Located in the town of Mountain Rest within the Sumter National Forest, Mountain Rest Cabins are situated on 27 wooded acres of land. Two meandering creeks add to the natural ambiance of the campground and there are countless attractions nearby just waiting to be discovered.

Fishing

The Walhalla Fish Hatchery, operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, is less than 30 minutes from the campground. Walhalla is the only cold water fish hatchery in the state and raises a number of different species of trout that stock public waters. You can fish for these trout at Oconee State Park, a quick ten minute drive from Mountain Rest Cabins, or enjoy fly fishing in the Chattooga River.

Waterfalls

If you love waterfalls, you’re in luck because there are dozens of beautiful cascades located near Mountain Rest Cabins. Not all of these falls are easy to access, but the following three waterfalls can be viewed with easy to moderate hikes or along the river.

Long Creek Falls, a multi-tiered, 50-foot waterfall that plunges into a refreshing pool near the Chattooga River is popular with paddlers and hikers. If you visit the falls by foot, the 1.6-mile moderate hiking trail isn’t an official forest service trail so look up directions before you go. This lovely waterfall is also popular for its appearance in the movie Deliverance.

Miuka Falls and Secret Falls can be reached by tackling the Winding Stairs Trail located in the Cherry Hill Recreation Area within the Sumter National Forest. This easy hike takes about 45 minutes and leads you to the beautiful 75-foot Miuka Falls and the smaller, but still gorgeous, Secret Falls.

Mountain Biking and Hiking

There are tons of excellent places to go mountain biking in and near Mountain Rest. Some of the more popular locations include Sadlers Creek State Park, Paris Mountain State Park, and Hilltop Bike Park.

Hikers will find numerous trails within the Sumter National Forest, Oconee State Park, and the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Rafting

The Chattooga River, a Wild and Scenic River, offers exciting opportunities for whitewater rafting. There are a handful of rafting operators in Mountain Rest that lead rafting expeditions that range from mild trips through Class II and Class III rapids to wild adventures that take your through Class IV and higher rapids.
