This unique park is located in the southeast corner of the state. Split Rock Creek has carved its way through this area, creating dramatic Sioux quartzite formations that range in height from a few feet to impressive 50-foot cliffs. Palisades State Park is known for its hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, fishing, and bird watching.

3. Sica Hollow State Park

Popular for its “Trail of the Spirits,” Sica Hollow State Park comes with a number of eerie Sioux legends. Bubbling red bogs, viewed as the flesh and blood of ancestors, can be seen along the famous trail adding to the mystery of the area. Waterfalls, wildflowers, streams, and bridges can also be explored by foot or horseback.

4. Bear Butte State Park: Sturgis

Bear Butte State Park can be found just north the Black Hills National Forest. Also known as Mato Paha (the Lakota name for this spectacular site), this sacred mountain was formed millions of years ago and continues to be a special place for many native people of South Dakota. Cultural and spiritual ceremonies still take place here, so if you see any pieces of cloth or small bundles hanging from trees, don’t disturb them. Hiking, boating, horseback riding, and fishing are just a few of the activities you can look forward to at this park. Be sure to hike up Bear Mountain for the amazing view!

5. Roughlock Falls State Nature Area: Savoy

Roughlock Falls State Nature Area, situated within spectacular Spearfish Canyon, is arguably one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Black Hills. Roughlock Falls, fed by Little Spearfish Creek, is a multi-tiered gem you won’t want to miss. The hike to the falls is roughly 2 miles out and back and offers great opportunities for taking pictures, wildlife watching, and just admiring the jaw dropping scenery of the canyon.
